Technology adds value going forward

KUCHING: Serba Dinamik Holdings Berhad (SDHB) group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ir Mohd Abdul Karim Abdullah believes that technology is the way forward and should be used to add value to solutionsprovided to customers.

He emphasised that adding value in this way can put companies ahead of other competitors in the industry.

“Technology plays a very important role and it can be viewed in terms of various aspects. For us in SDHB, wehave embraced and believe that the Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 and its embedded technologies will be veryuseful for us to acquire and master,” he said.

On Money Matters, a TV programme hosted by Zahir Kelvin Ong Abdullah which was broadcast on TV3 yesterday, he said that SDHB packaged technological capabilities into the solutions provided to their existingcustomers.

“For example, we use artificial intelligence (AI) in our predictive and preventive maintenance to analyse the health and condition of machines,” he said, adding that this diagnostic engine helped to process massive amounts of data efficiently.

“This puts us as a company ahead of other players in the industry,” he said.

He said that entering the information and communications technology (ICT) segment had helped place thecompany in a different category of service provider, as it was able to combine ICT content with their capabilities as an engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) company.

“This attracted a lot of interest and confidence from our customers because traditionally EPCC companies werejust that.

However, we came in with this attractive content which put us on a different platform compared to our competitors,” said Mohd Abdul Karim.

Explaining the reason that SDHB decided to venture into ICT, he said the company had to seek more options toincrease sales revenue and profitability in line with what was projected to stakeholders as well as their increasing expectations. He believed that there would be even more significant growth in SDHB’s ICT segment next year.

According to him, from 2015 until today, the company had invested approximately RM150 million into technological aspects and he believed that more needed to be put in.

“We are very confident that we are on the right path based on the feedback we have received and our success in securing jobs in that particular area,” he said.

On another note, Mohd Abdul Karim said that Malaysia was fortunate to have a government with strongcommitment and vision with regard to digital policies.

At the same time, he emphasised that there must be continuity so that the nation’s digital policy can be carried out according to the original objectives, adding that the policy needed to be delivered in a more aggressivemanner as time was running short.
